Figlio di un cantante country western che abbandona la famiglia quando Clive ha soli tre anni, compie i suoi studi alla Binley Park Comprehensive School. Prende parte a diversi spettacoli teatrali nella sua città finché, nel 1984, viene ammesso alla Royal Academy of Dramatic Art che frequenta per tre anni insieme a Ralph Fiennes. Subito dopo il diploma, si unisce alla compagnia del "Young Vic Theatre" e nel 1988 interpreta il suo primo ruolo importante, quello di Romeo, in "Romeo e Giulietta". Sua partner sul palcoscenico, Sarah Jane Fenton, la donna che è diventata sua moglie nel 1995 e dalla quale ha avuto due figlie. Il 1988 è un anno molto fortunato per l'attore che debutta sul grande schermo nel film "Vroom". Nei due anni successivi prende parte al serial tv "Chancer", e nel 1991, è un ragazzo ossessionato dalla figura della sorella più grande nel film "Close My Eyes". Ritorna a lavorare in teatro, ottenendo un grande successo, nel 1997 con "Closer", dramma di Patrick Marber incentrato sulle problematiche dei rapporti interpersonali. Sempre nel 1998 viene scelto dal regista Mike Hodges, come protagonista del film "Croupier". Finalmente anche Hollywood si accorge del suo talento. Nel 2001 è nel film "Gosford Park" di Robert Altman. E' l'inizio di un periodo di grandi successi professionali. Nel 2002 recita accanto a Matt Damon in "The Bourne Identity"e nel 2004 è re Artù nel "King Arthur" di Antoine Fuqua. Ma è Mike Nichols a regalargli la possibilità di conquistare, nel 2005, il suo primo Golden Globe, come miglior attore non protagonista nel film "Closer", versione cinematografica del suo primo grande successo teatrale.
